What plate am I on?

Which plate is under you?
Most people live on one of the seven major plates, but borders do not follow countries. California west of the San Andreas Fault rides the Pacific Plate, eastern Iceland sits on the Eurasian Plate while Reykjavik is on the North American Plate, and the PB2002 model puts most of Japan on the smaller Okhotsk and Amur plates. You can also look up any country in the plates by country list.
Frequently asked questions
How does this tool know which plate I am on?
It checks your coordinates against the outlines of the 52 plates in Peter Bird's PB2002 model, then measures the distance to the closest boundary segment. Everything runs in your browser; your location is never sent to our server.
How accurate is the result?
Plate outlines are simplified for speed, so expect the boundary distance to be within roughly 10 to 30 km. Near a boundary, or inside a broad deforming zone like Tibet or the western United States, the true plate edge is a wide belt rather than a sharp line.
Does living near a plate boundary mean I will have an earthquake?
It means the long-term chance of strong shaking is higher, not that a quake is coming soon. Building codes, local faults and soil matter as much as distance. Check your national geological survey for official hazard maps.
